Week 11: Online applications and tools

Using my gmail I logged into Google Docs, created an account and uploaded a PDF file of my school newsletter that was created  last year. Some of the formatting was lost which is a problem. I would use this application to have my newsletter edited  which would save time and money.

Week 10 Mashups

Enjoyed doing this, it was a lot easier to do than I thought it would be. A Mashup could be used in the library when promoting a book or  an activity that was to be held in the library - it would add interest.

Week 9: Podcasts and Audio

Our library would and should use Podcasts more often. At the moment we send CD and DVDs out to students. There will always be a place for CD and DVDs  movies and long musical pieces but for short pieces podcasts would work well.  A Podcast in our school environment would be used, when a student was unable to some into the school for a study day it would give the student a form of inclusion.

Week 7 continuing LibraryThing

Enjoyed this exercise. LibraryThing has some beaut features

LibraryThing

Week 7 tagging del.icio.us and Technorati

Here is my link to the del.icio.us web site http://www.delicious.com/Ottis2.

There is potential of this tool for research assistance - students could add what they have found in their research

Went to the Technorati web site and keyword searched for bookmobile and found only one post. Couldn't find the advance search feature but went to 'refine this search' and found six posts.  Searched for nswpln2008 and had no results. I must be doing something wrong but no sure what.

Week 5 Wikis

From the list of Wikis I found that:
The SJCPL Subject Guides wiki was an excellent site for the student with good across the board information. Loved when you clicked onto a subject it would give you the option to search further. It is a very friendly user site. Whilst you couldn’t add to the wiki, there was an email address for you to send your comment.

The Book Lovers Wiki at the Princeton Public library
An interesting site liked how the reader could put up their review of a book they had read. But I agree that the book review would be best placed within the catalogue.

Montana History Wiki
This Wiki was not open to editing but you could email your comment to the library staff – they gave an email address. This Wiki looks as if it is only used a research and reference tool.

The SJCPL subject guide wiki would work very well within a school a great example.

Week 4 RSS

What I like about RSS and newsreaders is that they save time and effort needed to regularly check my favourite web sites which I have subscribed to for updates.  They save you from having to search each site individually, the information comes to you.

Sites I selected are:
ABC News
Craft DIY Projects
Graphic Design – Behance Network
Graphic design
-          An ultimate resource for graphic designers
Sydney Morning Herald
Powerhouse Museum - what’s on
Powerhouse Museum – photo of the day.

As you can see a blend of work and personal sites

The Powerhouse Museum ‘what’s on” site is relevant to the Science, Social Studies and TAS departments within the school. Graphic design sites to keep me up to date with trends and give me ideas.

I found two excellent library blogs -Wollondilly Shire Council wollondilly library and Mosman Mosman Library blog

What I like about blogs

As I recreate the school’s newsletters and yearly magazine graphic design blogs are a must. Found this interesting site 'geekChic Web Design and Desktop Publishing's' which also has links to other desktop industry related blogs.

I can see the use of client blogging within the school – client being teachers keeping them up-to-date in relevant subjects. Also students researching for subject information could log onto that subject blog. It would take a lot of work to set up but these blogs could then direct the researcher to relevant subject links and they could also ask questions.

Questions! Questions!

What I would like to get out of this program is to be able to learn how to communicate through social media. Through the use of Web 2.0 applications such as blogs, wikis, and the other applications that I will learn as I work week by week through this course.

I was interested to read the Wikipedia’s definition of ‘Lifelong Learning’ and also looked at Helene Blower’s thoughts. I have could up with the following:
‘Lifelong Learning’ is important it allows us to move forward, to manage change. It can be in many forms from formal and informal learning, it will often take us out of our comfort zone but by learning new skills and tasks we keep our mind healthy and active. For example I'm a little out of my comfort zone.

Have just created a Flickr account and up loaded some pics

Hi,
Have just uploaded some images featuring my school library.  Took them early before we had visitors so as not to have any copyright issues.  The process of setting up an account with Flickr was easier than I thought it would be. I'm rather pleased with myself.

Cheers
